Raw Black Obsidian - Natural Volcanic Glass
A striking piece of black obsidian, carefully selected for our collection of rocks and minerals.
An exceptional display piece with a high-gloss front, while the back shows a mixture of glossy obsidian and its natural rough outer surface, with orange-brown staining.
Obsidian is a natural glass that forms when lava cools so rapidly that crystals don’t have enough time to grow.
It often contains minute mineral inclusions or trapped gas bubbles, and may also show flow lines.
This natural rough piece shows obsidian’s characteristic conchoidal fracture: the smooth, curved, shell-like surfaces formed where the glass has broken. Its broken faces have a bright, glassy lustre that reflects light beautifully.
Obsidian is one of the sharpest naturally occurring materials. Its broken edges can be sharper than steel. Always handle raw obsidian with care.
This piece does not stand up without being supported, so it either needs to be displayed lying flat or placed on a small stand.
The stand in our photo is not included.
