Moonstone is a trade name for a unique variety of feldspar that exhibits adularescence.
This optical phenomenon is characterised by a soft, milky glow that appears to float just below the surface of the stone.
Moonstone, which occurs in several colours, can be transparent or translucent.
A white stone, often described as 'rainbow moonstone' because of its distinctive blue flash, is actually a white or colourless type of labradorite.
The milky glow in moonstone is caused by the scattering of light within the structure of the mineral.
Moonstone, which has a long history, is steeped in mythology and folklore and has long been associated with the moon.
