A beautiful collection of chevron amethyst, also known as banded amethyst. Premium-grade rough and polished stones from our collection of rocks and minerals.
Chevron amethyst is a striking variety of amethyst characterised by its distinctive white patterns of white quartz.
Amethyst and chevron amethyst are both varieties of quartz whose purple colour comes from impurities of iron and natural radiation during crystallisation.
The alternating layers of white quartz in chevron amethyst form as the stone grows in stages, with shifts in the availability of iron and silica-rich solutions. The process creates the characteristic zigzag or V-shaped patterns that make chevron amethyst distinctive.
The layering occurs in specific conditions, often in large geodes or cavities within volcanic rock, just like standard amethyst. However, the alternating patterns require precise environmental changes during the stone’s formation.
While standard amethyst usually exhibits a more consistent purple colour, the dramatic banding of chevron amethyst makes it a captivating and unique variation. Chevron amethyst is the most extreme example of colour zoning, a typical characteristic of amethyst.
