Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass that forms when lava cools so rapidly that crystals don't have enough time to grow.
As a naturally occurring, non-crystalline solid, obsidian is a mineraloid.
It often contains minute mineral inclusions or trapped gas bubbles, and may also show flow lines. These features can sometimes be seen in strong light or on closer inspection.
This natural rough piece shows obsidian’s characteristic conchoidal fracture: the smooth, curved, shell-like surfaces formed where the glass has broken. Its broken faces have a bright, glassy lustre that catches the light, while other areas are more subdued.
Obsidian is one of the sharpest natural materials, and its fractured edges can be sharper than steel. As this is a rough piece, some edges may be sharp. Always handle raw obsidian carefully.
