Unakite is a colourful rock named after the Unaka range of Mountains in North Carolina.
Originally spelt 'unakyte', it was discovered in 1874.
Classified as a rock, not a mineral, unakite is a type of granite.
It forms through metamorphism which is the alteration of existing rocks through high temperature and pressure.
Due to its striking colour, unakite is widely used for cabochons, beads and other decorative items.
The most common colours are a combination of pink and green. Stones can exhibit varying shades and patterns.
Unakite is composed of epidote, feldspar and quartz.
