Mookaite Crystals - Smaller Sizes
If you're looking for a splash of colour, mookaite is always a great choice. These AAA-grade mookaite crystals are a smaller-sized tumbled stone, but size does vary from piece to piece.
Mookaite is often described as a type of jasper, which is geologically incorrect. True jasper is a microcrystalline variety of quartz, specifically chalcedony, that contains a significant amount of impurities or inclusions, giving it its opacity and wide range of colours.
Mookaite is composed of silicified radiolarians, which are microscopic plankton with silica-based skeletons that accumulated in ancient marine sediments. Over time, these remains absorbed silica and gradually transformed into a dense, hard, multicoloured rock.
Mookaite is mined on private land in Western Australia, which is the only place it can be found.
Its rich colours, which include reds, yellows, creams, and purples, are the result of mineral staining by iron oxides such as hematite and goethite.
Although a relatively hard stone, Mookaite is brittle, which can make cutting and polishing difficult.
Being small sizes, these mookaite crystals are not available to buy individually. The minimum purchase is ten stones.
200g is approximately 90 stones.
