Large Mookaite Cabochon Gemstone
This mookaite cabochon has been highly polished to a vitreous lustre. Only the top part of the gemstone has been polished.
The small hole visible in our photos does not go through to the back. This is a natural anomaly that would have been present in the rough stone from which this cabochon was cut.
The indentation on the back of the stone is on the opposite end.
Although mookaite is often described as a type of jasper, this is not entirely accurate. While it shares visual similarities with jasper, mookaite is a silicified rock composed of microcrystalline quartz and other minerals, formed from ancient sedimentary deposits.
Mookaite is mined on private land in Western Australia, the only place in the world where it's found.
