Black Obsidian Crystals - Volcanic Glass
Black obsidian tumbled stones from Mexico.
Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass that forms when lava cools so rapidly that crystals don’t have time to grow.
Being a naturally occurring, non-crystalline solid, obsidian is correctly known as a mineraloid.
Obsidian often contains minute inclusions, which can be traces of other minerals, gas bubbles, or flow lines. These can sometimes be visible in strong light or with closer inspection.
These subtle white specks, visible in some of our photos, are a natural part of the stone’s makeup. They can also appear as obsidian undergoes slow changes over time, which is typical for natural glass.
While obsidian is prized for its deep, glossy black surface, flawless stones are rare. Most exhibit minor inclusions or subtle natural patterns.
Impurities in obsidian can also affect its colour and sheen, leading to varieties such as rainbow, mahogany, snowflake, or sheen obsidian.
These finely polished black obsidian crystals are sold as medium-sized tumbled stones, but some are quite small. Stones being different sizes is common when they're produced in a rock tumbler as opposed to being cut and polished by hand.
