Raw Black Obsidian - Mexico
These natural black obsidian stones are in their natural state.
Each piece shows a mix of textures, from glassy surfaces to more rugged, natural faces. This reflects how obsidian typically occurs before any sorting or refinement.
When wet, the glassy appearance becomes more pronounced, with a deeper black colour. In our first photograph, the obsidian is wet. Obsidian is often photographed wet to highlight its colour and natural glossy lustre.
Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass formed from silica-rich lava. It has a smooth, glassy texture and is one of the sharpest known naturally occurring materials.
Historically, it was used to produce cutting tools, including blades and arrowheads, some of which were sharper than early metal equivalents.
