Colourful Agate Crystals from Brazil
Beautifully polished agate tumbled stones in a selection of smaller sizes. These crystals have been tumbled from Brazilian agate but the colour is likely to have been enhanced.
Our relationship with the mineral agate dates back thousands of years. Some of the earliest evidence of its use comes from Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq) where ornaments and tools have been found.
One of the oldest artefacts is an axe with cuneiform writing which has been dated to the 3rd millennium BC. This period spanned the years 3000 to 2001 BC.
Cuneiform which is the world's oldest writing system was first used around 3400 BC.
Agate is a hard mineral that takes on and retains a high polish. It's resistant to acids and retains its natural characteristics even after being dyed.
The colour of these agate crystals replicates the natural colour of carnelian.
Although agate can be extremely colourful it commonly occurs in shades of black, brown and grey.
Carnelian and agate are both varieties of chalcedony. Carnelian tends to be less included hence is more translucent. It's also slightly rarer which makes it more expensive.
These smaller sized agate crystals have a glass-like appearance and texture.
Size can vary from piece to piece. Some of the smaller stones are quite small.
