Colourful Agate Pendant

A beautifully polished agate gemstone with exceptional colour.  This cabochon has been mounted in timeless sterling silver.

The layer of greyish-white coloured quartz crystals are translucent whilst the rest of the stone is opaque. 

The deep red colour in this agate is likely to come from impurities of iron oxide.

The mineral agate which is composed primarily of silicon dioxide has been found on every continent.  Only a small amount of material is considered to be attractive enough to be used for cutting and polishing. 

Some of the earliest agate known to have been used for decorative purposes was found amongst artefacts from the ancient city of Ur (modern day Iraq).  Patterned stones particularly beads were found in the tomb of Queen Puabi (c. 2600 BC).
