The name 'green quartz' has changed over the years and is now used for many green varieties of quartz and even some jasper.
"Green quartz" originally described a type of quartzite. This material which has a dull leek-green colour is correctly known as "prase".
The name comes from the Greek 'praso' meaning 'leek'.
Green aventurine is sometimes sold as green quartz and vice versa but the two are not the same stone.
In the vast majority of cases 'green quartz' is not 'prase'.
