Palm-Sized Amethyst Geode
Another carefully chosen amethyst geode from our collection of rocks and minerals.
This piece features beautifully translucent crystals that reflect light from almost every angle.
The variation in size of a geode's crystals can be due to its age or the conditions under which it formed.
Factors such as temperature, cooling rate, and the concentration of mineral-rich fluids determine how quickly and how large crystals can grow. Lower saturation tends to form smaller crystals, while higher saturation can lead to larger ones.
Crystal size also reflects how long the cavity remained open to mineral-rich fluids. Although the cavity is enclosed, these fluids were still able to penetrate the surrounding rock through tiny pores or fractures, often caused by pressure or cooling. While that continued, the crystals kept growing.
A geode with tiny crystals is estimated to take at least 120,000 – 500,000 years to form, which, in geological terms, is considered fast.
Always position amethyst away from natural daylight to preserve the crystals' colour.
