Blue Lace Agate Polished Gemstones
Two highly polished blue lace agate cabochons, cut from stone mined at Ysterputs in Southern Namibia.
The Ysterputs mine in Southern Namibia is the original blue lace agate deposit. Although it can also be found in Malawi and Zambia, the finest material comes from Namibia.
The mine has been closed for many years, so material from this deposit is highly sought after.
We occasionally get the opportunity to buy gemstones with imperfections that are reduced instead of being repolished. The blue lace agate cabochon on the left in our photos caught our eye because of its colour and distinctive banding. It was reduced because it wasn't cut as well as it could have been.
The back of the gemstone isn't completely flat, and the top slopes very slightly. One side is 0.9 cm thick, while the other is 0.8 cm. These imperfections are reflected in the price.
The stone on the left is translucent, while the smaller stone on the right has a small area of translucent quartz between its agate bands.
