Polished Septarian Carving
A finely polished, freestanding Septarian nodule carving.
Septarian, correctly known as a
Septarian nodule or concretion, formed 200 to 66 million years ago.
This distinctive sedimentary rock is composed of aragonite, yellow calcite, and limestone.
Septarian form as mineral-rich water moves through marine sediment, causing nodules to harden and later develop internal cracks. These cracks are gradually filled with calcite and aragonite crystals over long geological periods of time.
The outer shell, typically limestone or mudstone, creates the characteristic cracked, mosaic appearance.
This striking septarian carving has been polished to a vitreous lustre, so it reflects light beautifully.
