Raw Marabá Amethyst from Northern Brazil
Rough Marabá amethyst from the Marabá region in Pará, northern Brazil.
Brazil is one of the
world’s leading producers of amethyst, with three major mining regions: Marabá, Pau d’Arco and Rio Grande do Sul. Each has distinct geological conditions that influence the quality of the amethyst crystals and the methods used to mine them.
Marabá amethyst forms in fracture fillings, growing in cracks within the host rock. The crystals are generally well-shaped, with some forming as freestanding points while others are interlocked. Individual crystals can be relatively large, with some measuring up to 50cm long and weighing up to 15kg.
In terms of colour, Marabá amethyst is typically less saturated than amethyst from other areas of Brazil. Although high-quality crystals can exhibit good colour, they’re still paler than the rich, deep purple amethyst from Pau d’Arco and Rio Grande do Sul.
A significant quantity of Marabá amethyst is heat-treated to produce citrine. Amethyst from Rio Grande do Sul is also heated to transform the purple stone into golden-yellow or orange citrine.
These highly translucent Marabá amethyst stones display excellent colour. Sizes are mostly small to medium, with a few larger stones.
