Amethyst Gemstone Pendant

Rich purple amethyst pendant with a small but chunky stone.  Mounted in a hand-crafted sterling silver setting.

Having such a deep shade shade of purple means this stone can initially look quite dark.  Once illuminated from behind a magical transformation takes place.

Amethyst crystals exhibit a vitreous lustre.  Stones with this lustre reflect light in a similar way to glass.

The history of amethyst can be traced back thousands of years.  Its colour and the fact it changes when exposed to heat was first documented by the ancient Greek philosopher Theophrastus.

An amethyst gemstone once used as a seal was recently found in Israel.  It features an engraving of a bird and a branch with five fruits.  Found in bedrock beneath the Western Wall in Jerusalem, it's believed to be approximately 2,000 years old.
