Lapis Lazuli from Afghanistan
These lapis lazuli crystals were tumbled from material mined at Sar-e Sang in the Badakhshan Province of northeast Afghanistan.
The mines where lapis lazuli is found are on a steep, treacherous slope, high up in the Hindu Kush Mountains. Lapis lazuli has been mined here for more than 6,500 years.
Lapis lazuli can be found in a few countries around the world, but the vast majority, and certainly the finest grade, comes from Afghanistan.
Although often described as a mineral, lapis lazuli is a metamorphic rock.
These lapis stones exhibit a rich blue colour with visible calcite inclusions.
We also have a slightly higher grade of lapis lazuli in our collection. The main difference is the deeper colour, slightly less prominent inclusions, and the superior polish.
These lapis lazuli crystals are classed as a medium-sized tumbled stone. Sizes do vary from piece to piece, and some are on the small side.
