AAA-Grade Blue Apatite Crystals
These blue apatite crystals from Madagascar exhibit an intense bluish-green colour and have been beautifully polished.
They're classed as AAA-grade tumbled stones, and it's easy to see why once they're in your hand.
Although widely known as 'apatite,' this name actually refers to an entire group of phosphate minerals.
The most common variety is fluorapatite, with the prefix 'fluor' indicating the presence of fluorine.
The name apatite comes from the Greek word for 'to deceive' or 'to be deceptive' because it's often mistaken for other minerals.
In the 1780s, a geologist who described and named the mineral zoisite wrote, 'Until now, it (apatite) has misled all mineralogists in its identification.'
Apatite occurs in several colours, but blue and green are particularly popular with collectors.
Although apatite can be used as a gemstone, it's difficult to work with because it's soft and brittle.
These blue apatite stones were produced in a rock tumbler, so size can vary from piece to piece.
With apatite being so soft and fragile, it's not unusual for some stones to have minor imperfections. Please bear in mind, tumbled stones are not polished in the same way as gemstones.
