Although used as a decorative material, phosphosiderite is relatively soft and brittle which makes it difficult to work with.
It was once called metastrengite but the name is now obsolete. Phosphosiderite comes from 'phospho' (from phosphate) and 'siderite' from the Latin 'sídēros' meaning 'iron'.
Iron phosphate is a chemical compound of phosphorous, oxygen and iron.
Phosphosiderite crystals can occur in shades of reddish-orange or hues of purple. They tend to be very small and are extremely rare.
The crystal habit of material used for decorative purposes is massive. This means crystals grow in large tightly intergrown masses with no visible external shape or structure.
