Mookaite Crystals from Western Australia
AAA-grade mookaite crystals from Mooka Creek. Fantastic colours, beautifully polished.
Mookaite is often described as a variety of jasper, but this isn’t geologically correct. It’s a silicified sedimentary rock known scientifically as Windalia Radiolarite, composed primarily of the fossilised remains of microscopic marine organisms called radiolarians.
Found only in Western Australia, Mookaite formed millions of years ago from the microscopic remains of marine plankton that settled on the seafloor. Over time, these silica-rich deposits hardened into stone.
Its rich colours, which include reds, yellows, creams, and purples, are the result of mineral staining by iron oxides such as hematite and goethite, carried through the rock by groundwater after its initial formation.
Although Mookaite is relatively hard, it tends to be brittle, which can make cutting and polishing difficult.
These highly polished mookaite crystals are larger-sized tumbled stones, but size can vary from piece to piece.
