Pink Cobaltoan Calcite - AAA-Grade
The colour of these cobaltoan calcite tumbled stones is truly mesmerising. Their vivid pink colour comes from trace amounts of cobalt within the crystal structure.
Cobaltoan calcite forms at relatively low temperatures, when groundwater carrying cobalt, nickel and zinc percolates through the host rock.
When higher concentrations of cobalt are present, the shade and depth of colour increase. There are no reports of the colour being enhanced through heat treatments.
Calcite is a relatively soft mineral with perfect cleavage, meaning it can break along planes of weakness easily. When calcium carbonate minerals such as calcite are heated to high temperatures, they decompose into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide gas. Therefore, heating cobaltoan calcite would likely damage the colour and the stone.
Cobalt, a relatively rare chemical element, is only mined in a limited number of countries. The finest material comes from Congo and Morocco.
We only have a small quantity of these AAA-grade tumbled stones available. They're all in our last photo.
These cobaltoan calcite crystals are medium-sized stones, but having been produced in a rock tumbler, size does vary slightly from piece to piece.
We also have grade-A cobaltoan calcite tumbled stones.
