Silicon Metal Small Pieces (chips)
These silicon metal chips are often sold as silicon, rather than silicon metal. When labelled as "silicon", it can be mistaken for pure silicon, which is incorrect.
In nature, silicon usually bonds with oxygen to form silica (quartz) and silicate minerals, such as olivine and mica.
Silicon metal is manufactured by smelting silica (quartz) with carbon at very high temperatures in a furnace. This removes the oxygen and produces silicon in its pure chemical form.
The molten silicon is then cooled into solid material and broken and shaped, or, in the case of these pieces, tumbled.
These silicon metal pieces are real silicon, but are produced industrially.
Silicon is the chemical element used in computer chips, but these pieces are not refined to the purity required for electronics, which is usually 99.9999% or higher.
These silicon metal pieces are an interesting addition to our collection and make an eye-catching display.
Available in lots of 20 to 100 grams.
We also have larger silicon metal tumbled stones.
