Manganese Metal Pieces
These distinctive pieces are often sold as manganese nuggets or manganese crystals, which is incorrect. They're also described as tumbled manganese, which is also incorrect.
The material being sold commercially as manganese ‘nuggets’ is refined manganese metal. Natural metallic manganese does not form like this in the Earth; it occurs as minerals such as pyrolusite, rhodochrosite, and various manganese oxides.
Pyrolusite is the primary ore of manganese.
These visually striking manganese metal pieces are produced by industrial refining.
First, manganese ores (rocks containing manganese minerals) are mined from a deposit. They're then smelted, meaning the manganese is extracted from the rock.
It's then further refined to remove other minerals, metals, and impurities.
In industry, manganese metal is produced as sheets, flakes, or irregular lumps. These rounded ‘nuggets’ are made by melting the purified metal and letting it cool into solid pieces. As the molten manganese cools, it forms smooth, rounded shapes with dimples, cavities, and surface indentations.
So, these manganese pieces are real manganese, but they're not natural manganese nuggets.
When manganese is extracted and refined, it becomes the pure metallic form of the element. Manganese metal is solid, silvery-grey to a dark steely colour, with a glossy or metallic lustre.
It would be incorrect to call these manganese ‘nuggets’ crystals (in the geological sense) or a mineral. They're solid pieces of the element manganese, so they are metal.
China is by far the world’s largest producer of electrolytic manganese metal; the purified manganese used to make these nuggets.
⭐ These manganese metal pieces are popular with collectors and photographers for their metallic texture and unusual surface patterns.
⭐ Each piece is a solid chunk of the element manganese, produced through industrial refining rather than natural geological formation.
Although classed as large, sizes vary from piece to piece. No two are the same shape or size. For single orders, subject to availability, we'll try to use medium or larger sizes. If purchasing 3 or more stones, sizes will be mixed.
These manganese pieces have a smooth, glossy texture and are quite heavy for their size.
