Although ruby fuchsite can be found in a few countries around the world, the vast majority comes from India.
Ruby fuchsite was named after German chemist and mineralologist Johann Nepomuk von Fuchs. His surname is pronounced 'fooks,' so the correct pronunciation is fooksite. For reasons unknown, ruby fuchsite is often misspelt 'fuschite.'
Fuchsite, a chromium-rich mica, is the green matrix. The distinctive red areas are red corundum, correctly known as ruby.
Ruby fuchsite is often mislabelled as ruby zoisite, which can look very similar, but they're two different rocks composed of different minerals. Both feature red corundum in a predominantly green matrix.
However, ruby fuchsite is more common than ruby zoisite, and lower-grade stones tend to be less expensive. It's also much softer, so stones must be handled carefully.
Ruby zoisite often features inclusions of black hornblende, which are not present in ruby fuchsite.
These striking ruby fuchsite stones have been cut and polished by hand. They're incredibly tactile and boast exceptional colour and markings.
