These unpolished solid copper balls are surprisingly tactile and sit comfortably without rolling.
In our first photo the copper ball is on a polished hematite ring. These are ideal for most mineral spheres but it's not really necessary for this piece.
We have two of these copper balls available, one is slightly larger than the other.
Although often described as a mineral or a metallic mineral,
copper is a chemical element. It's represented by the symbol Cu on the Periodic Table.
The letters Cu come from the Latin name Cuprum. Copper was originally imported by the Roman Empire from Cyprus. It was called 'aes cyprium' meaning 'metal of Cyprus' but was later shortened to cuprum.
Copper was the first metal to be used. Its history can be traced back at least 10,000 years.
Copper is highly resistant to corrosion
but does tarnish. Tarnish is caused by a chemical reaction with sulphur containing gases in the air. The tarnish that forms on silver actually comes from the copper.
One (or both) of these solid copper balls will make an eye-catching addition to any collection of rocks and minerals.
