Copper is one of the few metals that occurs naturally in a pure form. Known as native copper, this means it doesn't need to be extracted from an ore like other metals such as iron or aluminum.

Copper has been used by humans for over 10,000 years. It was one of the first metals to be used for tools and weapons.

Althugh often described as a mineral, copper is a chemical element.  On the Periodit Table it's the symbol Cu. This comes from its Latin name "cuprum."

Copper was imported by the Romans from Cyprus. It was initially called 'aes cyprium' meaning 'metal of Cyprus'. That was then shortened to 'cuprum.'

Copper is an excellent conductor of electricity and is used in a variety of electrical applications such as wiring, motors and transformers.  It's a good conductor of heat so is often used to produce cookware particularly pots and pans.

The Statue of Liberty is made of copper. This iconic monument has turned green over time because of a reaction with air and water.

Copper has antimicrobial properties which means it can kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria and viruses. This makes it useful for medical applications.

Copper is often alloyed with other metals such as zinc to make brass or tin to make bronze.  It's the main alloy in sterling silver.

The reddish-brown mark known as tarnish that appears on silver comes from the copper. Silver is relatively resistant to tarnish. Copper is used as an alloy of silver to add strength and durability.
