This area is the largest land-based manganese deposit on Earth. Sugilite is becoming rarer by the day, and the finest material commands exceptional prices.
The shades of red and purple seen in sugilite are caused partly by impurities of manganese. The amount present in manganese sugilite is considerably higher, so the stone can look almost black.
