Smoky quartz is a relatively hard but brittle crystal. The smokey-brown colour comes from radiation in the surrounding rock that interacts with impurities of aluminium.
The colour of smoky quartz crystals can vary from a light shade of brown to yellowish-brown to almost black. They can also have a slightly greyish appearance, although this material is not particularly popular. Very dark to almost black smoky quartz is known as Morion.
The colour of smoky quartz will fade if exposed to excessive heat or bright sunlight.
These are natural smoky quartz crystals, not clear quartz or citrine that's been heated.
