Ruby zoisite is a metamorphic rock composed of green zoisite, red corundum (ruby) and black amphibole. The Longido district of northern Tanzania is a major source.
It's also known as 'anyolite', from the Maasai word 'anyoli', meaning green, although the name is rarely used in the UK.
The names ruby zoisite and ruby in zoisite, which describe the ruby crystals embedded in the green zoisite, are both widely used.
This striking sphere comes with a polished hematite ring, which makes a subtle but elegant stand.
