Rough Kyanite Crystal on Quartz

Wonderfully eye-catching kyanite crystals on quartz matrix.  Kyanite crystals which are particularly distinctive are also known as blades. 

They often exhibit zones of colour and are known for having a different hardness within the same crystal.  When tested lengthways kyanite grades 4.5 to 6 on Mohs scale but across the width of the same crystal it grades 6 to 7.

This characteristic along with kyanite being very brittle makes it a difficult material to cut.  For this reason it's not used that often as a gemstone.

The mineral kyanite is widely used in industry primarily because of its hardness but also because of its ability to resist heat.  With that said it's also brittle.  

Kyanite is known for its long bladed crystals.  The crystals in these pieces have a vitreous lustre.  When positioned carefully they reflect light beautifully.

Kyanite is very fragile so should be handled as little as possible.  The pieces in our collection come from the Minas Gerais state of Brazil. 

Due to their fragility they will be very well packaged.
