Mookaite is one of Australia's best known gemstones. It occurs in a wide range of striking colours which makes it particularly eye-catching and hugely popular.
Mookaite is a variety of jasper widely used for decorative purposes. It has only been found in one relatively small area in Western Australia.
Although well known as 'Mookaite', this trade name has never been officially registered.
The stone's geological name is windalia radiolarite. Although other varieties of radiolarite can be found around the world, windalia can only be found in Mooka Creek.
Mooka Creek is in the town of Carnarvon, approximately 600 miles north of Perth. Mookaite is mined on private land that is not accessible to the public.
