Citrine Pendant Designed in Sterling Silver
A gorgeous citrine pendant designed in a handcrafted, fine sterling silver setting. The bale of the pendant features our own SM hallmark from the London Assay Office.
This pendant has been slightly reduced because of a minor mark on the front of the bale. It can be seen in photos 2 and 3, and is a minor polishing issue that looks like a small indentation.
This pear-shaped citrine has a checkerboard cut, which enhances the colour and how it reflects light.
The gemstone is heated amethyst, which is widely accepted in the jewellery trade as a replacement for citrine.
Natural citrine is relatively rare, so a gemstone of this size and grade would be difficult to find and incredibly expensive.
Low-grade citrine is far more common, but the colour is generally pale or can look washed out. When heated, saturation can improve slightly, but the shade can also change to more of a brownish-yellow.
Most of the 'citrine' jewellery being sold, especially larger stones and those with a richer colour, is heated amethyst. It's also quite common to see these stones being described as natural citrine. This tends to be because the retailer has been misinformed by their supplier.
When well produced, heated amethyst citrine can be very beautiful. This gemstone is a perfect example.
It exhibits some colour zoning, which is a typical characteristic of amethyst. This variation in colour is rarely present in natural citrine.
