The deep red inclusions in bloodstone are caused by traces of iron, most likely from hematite.
With bloodstone being a fine-grained mineral, it can be highly polished. It's mostly used for decorative purposes.
Bloodstone was once used to prevent nosebleeds and as a remedy for haemorrhaging and inflammatory diseases. Today, in crystal healing, it's still used for disorders relating to the blood.
