African Bloodstone Crystals - Seftonite
This bloodstone from Madagascar is commonly known as Seftonite. This name is only associated with Bloodstone from Africa, which can have a slightly different appearance.
These stones from Madagascar have a greyish-green base colour with strikingly prominent red patches. The bold contrast between the background and vivid iron oxide inclusions gives them a dramatic and highly distinctive appearance.
Bloodstone is a variety of jasper, an opaque type of chalcedony.
Some online sources describe Seftonite as a brecciated chalcedony with pyrite inclusions, but after extensive research, I can find no geological data to support this.
Seftonite lacks formal scientific analysis, which is often the case for rocks and minerals used in lapidary work or valued for their metaphysical properties.
The size of these African Bloodstone crystals varies from piece to piece. Some are quite small, while others are on the larger side of medium.
