Pyrite also known as iron pyrite is a fascinating mineral which crystallises in many different shapes. It occurs worldwide in small quantities within sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks. The Rio Tinto mines of Spain produce vast quantities of pyrite. Bolivia, Brazil, Peru, Japan, Canada, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Greece and Slovakia have also been known to produce very fine specimens.Although relatively hard pyrite is also brittle so will chip or shatter if knocked or dropped. It does not react well to moisture so should not be allowed to get wet.
