Pyrite Mineral Unpolished
Pyrite is a fascinating mineral that crystallises in several shapes.
Also known as iron pyrite and fool's gold, this naturally occurring solid occurs worldwide in small quantities within sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks.
The Rio Tinto mines of Spain produce vast quantities. Bolivia, Brazil, Peru, Japan, Canada, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Greece, and Slovakia have also been known to produce fine specimens.
Although relatively hard, pyrite is brittle, so will chip or shatter if knocked or dropped. It does not react well to moisture, so should not be allowed to get wet.
The flat crystal face of this pyrite mineral is highly reflective.
This piece would have been cleaned after being excavated, but is otherwise untouched.
