Natural Citrine Not Heated Amethyst

Most people's perception of the colour of citrine is likely to come from them being used to seeing heated amethyst. With natural citrine being relatively rare amethyst is often heated to replicate the stone.
When heated, amethyst turns yellow before turning yellowish orange and then brown. Heated amethyst can often have an almost burnt orange colour. Another telltale sign is that heated amethyst will usually show areas of white opaque quartz.

They have a vitreous lustre which means the surface of the stone reflects light in a similar way to glass.
