Silicon Tumbled Stones
These metallic, oval-shaped silicon tumbled stones are silicon metal rather than a naturally occurring mineral.
In nature, silicon usually bonds with oxygen to form silica (quartz) and silicate minerals, such as olivine and mica.
Silicon metal is manufactured by smelting silica (quartz) with carbon at very high temperatures in a furnace. This removes the oxygen and produces silicon in its pure chemical form.
The molten silicon is then cooled into solid material and broken and shaped, or, in the case of these pieces, tumbled.
These tumbled pieces are real silicon, but are produced industrially.
Silicon is a chemical element used in computer chips, but these tumbled stones are not refined to the ultra-high purity required for electronics.
These silicon tumbled stones make an interesting addition to our collection and make an eye-catching display.
We also have silicon metal chips, which are sold by weight.
