Blue Topaz Pendant Chunky Design

Despite being a relatively hard mineral topaz is very fragile. The main difficulty is that it breaks easily along planes of weakness in its crystal structure. In geology this is known as cleavage. This characteristic makes cutting and polishing topaz more difficult.
Although blue topaz does occur naturally it's extremely rare. The vast majority is produced by heating colourless topaz.
Depending on the type of heat treatment used three shades of blue can be produced. Sky Blue tends to be more popular than London Blue and Swiss Blue. This is likely to be because of price and availability.
