Freestanding Pyrite - Peru
A raw pyrite piece with a textured, golden front and a smooth, dark shale back. The pyrite has formed naturally as a metallic crust on the host rock, creating a striking contrast between the two sides.
This type of pyrite is common in sedimentary environments, but this particular piece stood out to me because it’s unusual to see it formed in this way.
The brassy yellow, crystallised face has a slightly rough texture and a bright metallic lustre. Although it can’t be fully appreciated from the photos, it reflects light beautifully.
The back is smooth with a dull lustre, absorbing light rather than reflecting it.
