Calcite is a common mineral which can be found in most geological environments. Honey calcite tends to be found in areas with an abundance of limestone.
Calcite which is soft and fragile can be transparent to opaque. In its purest form it's white or colourless. Impurities cause a wide range of colours. The colour of honey calcite comes from small amounts of hematite in its crystal structure.
Calcite is allochromatic which means its colour is always caused by something outside of its natural chemical elements.
Calcite was named by the ancient Roman naturalist and natural philosopher Pliny the Elder [23-79 AD]. He named it 'calx' from the Latin for 'chalk' or 'limestone'. Calcite mostly occurs in sedimentary rocks such as limestone.
When used for its healing properties calcite enhances memory and psychic ability, spirituality and strengthens intellect. It encourages and speeds up movement so is a great crystal to use if you're feeling lethargic or lazy.

The size of these rough honey calcite stones varies considerably from piece to piece. We have split them into two sizes, small to medium and large. Sizing is a rough scale because no two pieces are the same size. The stones in our photos are all large pieces.
