Amethyst Geode with Four Crystals
A striking amethyst geode with large translucent crystals. This piece was mined in Brazil.
The four crystals in front were once embedded within the rock but became loose when it was separated from the original stone. The crystals come with the geode.
An
amethyst geode is a rock formation that consists of a hollow cavity lined with translucent crystals of amethyst.
Amethyst which is a violet to purple coloured mineral is one of the most popular
varieties of quartz.
Amethyst geodes form when gas bubbles become trapped in lava or sediment and are gradually filled with mineral-rich fluids. Over long periods of time a unique and mesmerising
crystalline structure is formed that's prized by mineral collectors around the world.
The size of the amethyst crystals in a geode are influenced by the age and composition of the host rock. The presence of other minerals and the availability of nutrients for crystal growth also plays a part.
The rate at which amethyst crystals form and grow is also influenced by temperature.
It's important to note the colour of amethyst fades over time when exposed to sunlight. Therefore the best position for an amethyst geode would be away from natural daylight.
