Chevron amethyst which tends to be known as banded amethyst in the UK, gets its name from the chevron or v-shaped markings.

The amount of white quartz that's present can vary dramatically from one stone to the next.
The formation of the patterns are influenced by several factors including temperature and pressure.
A typical characteristic of amethyst is colour zoning. This means the colour is not uniform throughout the crystal. Banded amethyst is the most extreme example. When this translucent stone is held up towards the light the variation in colour can be clearly seen.
This grade A banded amethyst palm stone has a glass-like appearance and texture. It's an outstanding piece that can be used for decorative purposes or for its healing properties.
The greenish coloured stones in the background of our last photo are banded amethyst that's been heated. This material is then sold as green amethyst.
