Translucent Amethyst Crystal with Citrine
A finely polished and beautifully translucent amethyst crystal with inclusions of citrine.
This combination, which is relatively rare, occurs naturally under specific geological conditions.
The first five photos were taken adjacent to a sunny window with minimal additional lighting.
In the last photo, this amethyst crystal is in the centre.
The citrine is clearly visible when this amethyst crystal is held up towards natural daylight.
The crystals at the base are mostly milky quartz due to the way amethyst forms.
The first crystals to grow in this geological process are pure silica, so tend to be colourless to milky-white. As conditions change over time, iron impurities are introduced, causing later crystals to turn purple.
This is why the base of an amethyst crystal often has less colour. It’s also a good indicator of when amethyst has been heated to produce citrine. When amethyst is heated, the purple crystals turn yellow, but the milky quartz doesn't change.
