Iridescence in quartz is often more pronounced in crystals with inclusions or internal fractures because of how light reflects off these features.
Many crystal balls being sold are glass or lead crystal, neither of which is quartz. Crystal balls from China are often coated with a fine, translucent substance that produces iridescence. They also tend to be mass-produced using sophisticated machinery.
These crystal balls, which are from Brazil, were cut and polished by hand.
