Malachite is a soft stone that must be handled carefully. Being so soft makes it difficult to tumble, so stones often have minor imperfections.
The price of malachite has risen sharply in recent months, although I haven’t been able to establish a definitive reason. The quality of malachite currently in circulation also seems lower than it once was.
These stones were carefully selected from ethically mined material sourced from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
One likely reason for the price increase is that most of the world’s malachite comes from this region, and distributors are now becoming more selective, often choosing only to buy from suppliers who follow ethical mining practices.
This means that everyone involved is paid fairly, with no children being involved, but these standards inevitably raise the cost of the final product.
The price increase has also led to a significant rise in fake malachite entering the supply chain.
