Zebra Jasper Gemstone
Zebra jasper, named for its contrasting black and white colour, is a trade name for a type of marble from Rajasthan, India. Another material, known as Zebra Stone from Utah, has a very similar appearance, but the chemical composition of the two materials is different.
Zebra jasper is not a true jasper. True jasper is a form of microcrystalline quartz, whereas this material is carbonate-based marble.
This cabochon gemstone has been finely polished to a vitreous lustre. Being marble, it has an exceptionally smooth texture.
One edge of the stone has a minor dip, which is a natural indentation. It can be seen along the top edge in our first photo.
