Dalmatian Jasper Tumbles (Mexico)
Dalmatian jasper tumbled stones in medium and larger sizes.
Dalmatian jasper is a natural material mined in the state of Chihuahua in Mexico.
Due to its spotted appearance it was named after the breed of dog made famous in the Walt Disney film.
As if a stone that's mined in Chihuahua called dalmatian jasper is not strange enough, this stone is not even a jasper!
Trade names are often given to rocks and minerals purely for marketing purposes. In many cases little consideration is given to the material's chemical composition.
The name "jasper" is often used because it's a well known and popular type of stone.
Dalmatian jasper is an alkali feldspar granite. This material is correctly known as Perthite. Perthite is named after the city of Perth where it was first discovered.
The distinctive black spots in dalmatian jasper are inclusions of the relatively rare mineral arfvedsonite. Arfvedsonite was named after Swedish chemist Johan August Arfwedson who identified it.
He's best known for the chemical element lithium which he discovered in 1817.
The dark coloured spots are often incorrectly reported to be tourmaline.
A more accurate name for this material would be dalmatian stone but unfortunately it's known around the world as dalmatian jasper.
These grade A tumbled stones have been beautifully polished. Although classed as a large sized tumbled stone some are closer to medium. We have therefore split them into medium and large.
If buying a single stone you can select the size. For purchases in multiples of 10, 20 or 30 sizes will be mixed.
