Dalmatian Jasper is an alkali feldspar granite, correctly known as Perthite. It was named after the city of Perth in Ontario, Canada, close to where it was discovered.
The distinctive spots are inclusions of the relatively rare mineral arfvedsonite, named after the Swedish chemist Johan August Arfwedson.
The dark spots are often incorrectly reported to be tourmaline.
